I started using Google Home back in 2016 but only experimented with meaningful automations last year. Since then, I’ve discovered just how much a well-automated home can improve your life — especially your sleep.

Lights On Before Bed: A Simple Automation

Even with smart lights in every room, our apartment has extremely bright track lights controlled by switches. Every night, my wife would turn them on before bed to avoid bumping into furniture. The harsh lights would jolt me awake, and I had to get up to turn them off. To solve this, I set up a daily automation so the bedroom lights turn on at sunset and dim automatically. This simple change has eliminated our nightly light battles and created a more harmonious sleep environment — no more harsh overhead lighting ruining the mood.

Thermostat Down at Night: Cooler Heads Sleep Better

Temperature plays a huge role in sleep quality. According to WebMD, the ideal sleeping temperature is 60–65°F, while warmer conditions over 70°F can promote insomnia. Since 65°F is too chilly for evening activities like showers or lounging, I programmed my Google Nest Thermostat to lower the temperature to 65°F at midnight. The result? Much more restful sleep — though my three-year-old still insists on waking at 5 a.m.

Bedtime Reminders: Shut It Down

Sometimes the hardest part of sleep is actually going to bed. Binge-watching a show or playing a game can make it easy to lose track of time. I use a simple Google Home automation on my Nest Hub Max to provide a gentle bedtime reminder at 10 p.m. This automation: turns off all the lights, powers down the TV, and plays relaxing ocean sounds on my Nest Audio speaker. It’s the perfect setup for winding down, leaving me free to just get into bed and fall asleep.
