Typepad is a name you probably haven’t heard in a very, very long time, but it was surprisingly still alive it wasn’t exactly kicking, but it was alive by most definitions of the word. Now, though, it’s getting the cord pulled after years of being essentially in life support.

Typepad, one of the oldest microblogging platforms still live on the Internet, is going offline. Come September 30th, blogs and accounts hosted on the decades-old website will be taken down for good, and the service as a whole will cease to exist. It’s getting quite an unceremonious end, considering how long it’s been online, with little over a month of notice and nothing other than a short blog post to say goodbye to it. But if you think about it, it makes sense. The platform hasn’t allowed new sign-ups since 2020, a whopping five years ago, so it has really just stayed online as an archive of sorts. And if you access any blog hosted on Typepad, you’ll find that it’s an immediate throwback to the late 2000s or early 2010s its design is really dated.
The writing has been on the wall for a while. Typepad was first launched in 2003, a whopping 22 years ago, and was launched around the time other blogging platforms such as WordPress it’s only predated by Blogger, which was launched in 1999. At its height, though, Typepad was used by countless news outlets, and it was surprisingly flexible for a blogging platform for its day, supporting features such as multiple authors and photo albums. Sadly, it has been a shell of itself for a few years, to the point it’s one of those services you probably weren’t even aware were still around. It’s one of the early jewels of the internet, and we’re surprised it lasted this long, considering how it hasn’t even allowed for new sign-ups for a solid few years those looking to sign up for a Typepad blog are redirected to Bluehost instead.
If you were one of the few remaining Typepad users, Typepad will not continue to charge you for services, and effective August 31st (so this Sunday), it will attempt to issue prorated refunds to those who were charged for services this month. Your blog will continue to be live until September 30th, at which point it will be taken down. If you don’t want to lose years of posts, you’ll have to export your data.
Like dial-up internet, it probably lived a lot more years than it should have, but it’s gone now. Rest in peace.
